Those were utterly brutal for a total lack of explanation or guidance, and it's taken a fair bit of time to retrain my brain away from the modern gaming paradigm of QTEs, in-game training sections, mini-maps and constant quest markers to be able to play them competently.Įven with mid-90s RPGs that were a bit more gentle, there's still a LOT of stuff that you'd never have a chance of finding or knowing how to do without a walkthrough to hand. In recent years I've been going back and playing old RPGs that weren't released in the UK in the 80s and 90s - most notably the early Final Fantasy games. Figure it out" - and because you were used to that at the time, you not only didn't complain, you also figured it out. Almost every game until the end of the 90s had a mentality of "here's the controller. Having played TR1 on release as a kid, I never once thought "wow, this is badly designed" or "man, I'm struggling to figure out what to do next". The real star however is Lara Croft, one of the most badass, athletic and confident female video game characters of all time. The puzzles are pretty fun and I do love the classical music. There's over a dozen levels in each game and some levels playing for the first time can take an hour to complete. I'm more impressed that the levels are so huge and I also find it impressive that the bodies of enemies you defeat remain on the ground which does put more strain on the hardware, but it is handy because it helps me remember I was there. I still love the games even if the controls haven't aged well. I also don't like being trapped against a wall by an enemy and some enemies in the first game were just way too fast. I think what I dislike most is that Lara pushes boxes and climbs ladders way too slow. The controls do take some time to get used to, but it's not impossible to play. I only started playing the games a few years ago and while the game controls nothing like games today, they were far from terrible or broken.
